OFFSHORE WIND POTENTIAL MAY BE SA’S ANSWER TO DECARBONISATION

South Africa was one of many nations that signed an intended nationally determined contribution to commit to reducing carbon emissions, COP21. This pledge requires the country to decrease carbon emissions by over 40% by 2025, and according to the Department of Environmental Affairs renewable energy is the most logical and feasible means of achieving this. With this ambitious/mammoth undertaking, a number of energy experts, academics and research studies view off-shore wind as the answer. (more…)

EXPERTS DISCUSS ROLE OF HYBRID ENERGY SYSTEMS IN SA ENERGY MIX – WINDABA CONFERENCE

As South Africa continues on its journey to a greener economy, energy experts, who gathered at this year’s Windaba conference, predict that our future energy mix is likely to include dispatchable power, in the form of hybrid systems  This follows the DMRE’s launch of its technology agnostic Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMI4P) last year, resulting in the renewable energy sector stepping in to develop hybrid energy systems, characterised by a mix of Wind, Solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and dispatchable generation (DG).
