To advance dialogue and consideration of contemporary challenges facing the South African wind industry, SAWEA will be hosting a series of industry conversations or ‘think-in events’, starting with a pre-Windaba 1-day symposium on July 12th. This first ‘SAWEA Think-In’ event will be larger than others, with a maximum of 60 delegates. SAWEA members will receive registration priority.
This year a change in government leadership has quickly resulted in much-needed resolution of the two-year independent power sector impasse with Eskom. The impasse created severe challenges for all invested in the growth of South Africa’s renewables industry, but also provided much-needed food for thought in terms of how industry reports on and enables socio-economic benefit. Despite a growing body of evidence relating to industry’s contribution to local ownership and local community benefit, the industry has been increasingly criticised for its perceived lack of transformation, meaningful participation and its tendency to perpetuate power inequalities.
It is clear that as the pace of the energy transition increases, the growing SA renewables industry will need to go beyond statistics and a healthy compliance track record to demonstrate how as a major winner in the transition, it plans to show leadership and more actively contribute to local economic transformation.
This year SAWEA has also embarked on the implementation of a revised 3-year business plan that will serve to strengthen how the industry is perceived and trusted. As an industry association we recognise that this Industry’s effectiveness in the transition will benefit from honest reflection, the capacity to welcome new ideas and be open to innovation.
The July symposium will be facilitated by industry specialist, Masechaba Mabilu and 9 provocateurs will be invited to stimulate vibrant discussion. Over the course of the day, 3 themes will be explored, concluding with a call to Industry action that will be further supported by the Windaba 2018 programme. An informal networking session open to SAWEA members only will follow at the end of the day.
